If you’re starting out as an Independent NDIS Support Provider, one of the first steps to becoming professional is registering your business name. This is the name you’ll use on your invoices, website, and any paperwork — and it helps clients recognise you as a trusted service provider.
1. Decide if You Need a Business Name
If you plan to work under your own personal name (e.g. “Sarah Jones”), you don’t need to register a business name.
But if you want to use something different — like “Helping Hands Support” or “Care with Heart” — you’ll need to register that name with the government.
2. Check if the Name is Available
Before registering, visit the ASIC Business Name Check and search to make sure your chosen name isn’t already taken.
It’s a good idea to also check if the .com.au domain is available for your website if you are going to use one for marketing.
3. Get an ABN (Australian Business Number)
You’ll need an ABN to register a business name, so make sure you have done that first. We have a guide on doing that as well.
If you don’t have one yet, apply for free at the Australian Business Register (ABR).
4. Register Your Business Name
Once you have your ABN:
- Go to the ASIC Business Name Register.
- Log in using your ABN details.
- Enter your business name and contact information.
- Pay the small registration fee — about $42 for one year or $98 for three years - These prices are subject to change and are subject to ASIC.
5. Keep Your Registration Up to Date
Your business name must be renewed before it expires. ASIC will usually email or mail you reminders.
You can also update your address or contact details anytime through the ASIC website.
6. Use Your Business Name Professionally
Once registered:
- Include your business name and ABN on all invoices.
- Use it on your email signature, website, and any marketing materials.
- Keep it consistent so clients can easily recognise your brand.
